Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the World T.20 2016, the International Cricket Council announced on March 30. Manish Pandey, who was called in as cover for the left-hander, has been drafted into the squad.
Yuvraj injured his ankle in the match against Australia while batting in Mohali and had to undergo scans in Mumbai. The left-hander looked in a lot of discomfort during his 18-ball stay in which he score 21. "It will have an impact because he's had his moments," said Ravi Shastri, the team director, in a press conference ahead of the semifinal clash against West Indies in Mumbai. "I thought his three overs were brilliant in the last game. It put the brakes on the scoring and allowed us to come back in the game. Because after the first four overs, it was a no contest - it looked 200, 220, which would have been very difficult to chase on that surface.
"It's an injury that happened during the game when he was looking to take off, and I believe it's a minor tear on the ankle. We'll miss him."
Pandey scored his maiden One-Day-International (ODI) hundred in his last outing for India in Sydney in the final ODI of the series against Australia. He has previously played two T20Is for India against Zimbabwe in July 2015.
Shastri kept his cards close to his chest about who is likely to replace Yuvraj. "We've not decided," he said. "Manish has just joined the party yesterday. We'll take a good look at everything in the nets and see what's the best option for tomorrow. Yes, we'll have to keep those overs (the ones Yuvi bowled in Mohali) in mind."
India can replace Yuvraj with either Pandey or Ajinkya Rahane, who knows the conditions well at the Wankhede Stadium having played for Mumbai. The hosts already have Bhuvneshwar Kumar travelling with the team as the 16th member in case there are any other injuries.
