Sandeep Patil, the current chairman of selectors of the national side, has expressed his desire to fill the vacant spot of the Indian coach. According to an Indian Express report, Patil is one of the host of ex-cricketers who is willing to apply for the post that the Board of Control for Cricket in India has recently advertised for.
The most notable requirement of all is the need for the coach to be able to converse in indian languages. While BCCI did make it clear that this wasn't a mandatory requirement, they went of to state that knowing the language would strengthen their chances. As a indian Patil will have not any problems in that department.
Patil has actually coached India for a six months in 1996. However his eureka moment came when as a coach with Kenya in 2003, when the Steve Tikolo-led side stunned many stronger teams to advance to the semifinal of the World Cup. This stint of Patil's adds credibility to his profile as BCCI seek an individual who has coached at first-class or international level before. After his Kenya stint, Patil also coached India A and Oman.
BCCI also requires their coach to "demonstrate plans and ability to contribute to the NCA Cricket Development Programmes and forecasting/planning to develop the next generation cricketer and agree to make themselves available for the NCA, as and when they are not with the team" and Patil, former director of the NCA, fits the bill once again.
Shastri, whose tenure as team director ended after the World T20 2016, is yet to apply but will be encouraged to go ahead after players reportedly gave positive feedback of the ex-cricketer's role in the side since he joined them on the tour of England in 2014.

While Patil will tick a lot of boxes, the report adds that the likes of Vikram Rathour, a current selector, Pravin Amre, Lalchand Rajput, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar could also be interested in the role. Sanjay Bangar, the former cricketer who will accompany the team to Zimbabwe as the head coach, is also in the fray. Bangar was part of Ravi Shastri's staff as batting coach.
