Fifty three matches into Indian Premier League 2016, we finally have two teams who have qualified for the play offs. Gujarat Lions have ensured a top two spot after their clinical win over Mumbai Indians in their last league game at Kanpur. The Lions' win has also ensured a qualification for Sunrisers Hyderabad although their final standing is still undecided. Two spots are still up for grabs and four teams are still in contention.
Here's how the things stand after the match 54 of IPL 2016 between Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians and what teams need to do to progress further.
Gujarat Lions (Points 18; NRR -0.374)
QUALIFIED (guaranteed finish in the top two)
Sun Risers Hyderabad (Points 16; NRR +0.355)
QUALIFIED
Matches left:
Vs Kolkata Knight Riders, Kolkata, 22 May 2015
If they beat Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league game, they will finish in the top two.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (Points 14; NRR +0.930)
Matches left:
Vs Delhi Daredevils, Raipur, 22 May 2015
If they beat Delhi Daredevils in their last match, they will qualify. They can finish in the top two only if Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad.
If the Knight Riders win their game against Surisers Hyderabad, the Royal Challengers Bangalore-Delhi Daredevils game will be a virtual quarter final.
But if Knight Riders lose against the Sunrisers, Royal Challengers can go through even if they lose to Daredevils. Only a humongous defeat will result in Royal Challengers Bangalore's ouster.
Kolkata Knight Riders (Points 14; NRR +0.022)
Matches left:
Vs Sun Risers Hyderabad, Kolkata, 22 May 2015
If they beat Sunrisers, they are guaranteed a Play Off berth.
If they lose to Sunrisers, they will end up in a three way tie with Mumbai Indians and the loser of the Royal Challengers Daredevils encounter. If it is Royal Challengers who lose, Knight Riders are almost certain to be eliminated as Royal Challengers have a higher Net Run Rate compared to the other two teams. But if it is Daredevils who lose, Knight Riders have a realistic chance of scraping through.
Mumbai Indians (Points 14; NRR -0.146)
If Knight Riders win their final match against Sunrisers, the defending champions stand eliminated.
But if Sunrisers prevail overs Knight Riders at Kolkata, there would be a three-way tie with Knight Riders and loser of Royal Challengers Daredevils match. For Mumbai Indians to qualify, Knight Riders has to lose by at least 45 runs and Daredevils by at least 15 runs (provided both concede 160 runs). But if Royal Challengers lose to Daredevils, it is next to impossible for Mumbai Indians to beat them on Net Run Rate.
Delhi Daredevils (Points 14; NRR -0.102)
Matches left:
Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Raipur, 22 May 2015
If they beat Royal Challengers, they are through to the Play Offs.
If Knight Riders win their final game against Sunrisers, it will make their match against Royal Challengers a must-win game. But if Knight Riders lose out against Sunrisers and Daredevils lose to Royal Challengers, there will be a three-way tie at 14 points between Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Daredevils. For Daredevils to qualify, they have to keep their Net Run Rate above Mumbai Indians' -0.146 and the Net Run rate of Knight Riders (+0.022) must come below Daredevils (-0.102 or less).NOTE: Rising Pune Supergiants and Kings XI Punjab have already been eliminated.
